Common Acne Myths

Because acne is such a common problem that affects many people worldwide there are a huge number of myths about it. You may be surprised that some of the things you thought were facts about acne are actually not true! In this article I’ll go through some of the more common acne myths so you have a better idea of what really works for acne.

Probably the most common of all the acne myths is that it is caused by eating fatty foods and especially chocolate. There isn’t any real evidence that this is the case so you shouldn’t worry about eating chocolate for acne – although it is probably best to avoid eating large quantities for your general health.

Some people may find that certain foods cause them to have a breakout of acne but these differ between different people. If you find that chocolate doesn’t cause breakouts for you then there is no reason to stop eating it – in moderation of course!

It is also not true that you can get rid of acne by lying in the sun! A sun tan may stop acne from showing up so much on the skin but it certainly won’t get rid of them. People with tanned skin have less noticeable acne but they don’t have less of a problem with acne.

There is also the chance of getting other skin problems such as skin cancer if you spend too long lying on the sun so it is best not to do it. Definitely don’t do it as an acne cure because it won’t work and could make the problems worse.

Many acne remedies work by claiming to clean your skin better than other products. The problem is, acne isn’t caused by unclean skin so it won’t help at all in most cases! While you should clean your face once a day, overdoing it can actually make your skin dry, irritable and more likely to have acne outbreaks.
