How to Look After Your Natural Hair Extensions-Secrets Revealed

Natural hair extensions are the most popular because they look and feel so natural and are so easy to wear. There are several ways of attaching real hair, but a patented system such as a rubber bond, gives a firm hold but is safe and easy to remove. With the best type each individual extension is separately coloured and matched as it is applied, allowing for subtle highlights and lowlights giving a suitably natural appearance. The most popular type is Euro Grade hair with a soft, natural feel and extensive colour range. This type of hair will dry with a natural wave, and, within limits can be styled in the same way as your own hair.

There are however some dos and don’ts concerning their maintenance that you need to know. If your hairdresser hasn’t given you the information on how to best look after your extensions, it might be to get you back to the salon sooner than you need for reasons of profit. Anyway, these are points that you should consider in order to get the maximum life, and hence value, from your hair extensions:

The information you need to know is as follows: Real hair extensions are much more likely to dry out than your own hair as they can’t absorb any of the natural oils from the scalp. When shampooing you need therefore to rinse out thoroughly and then apply a thin layer of extra moisturizing formula conditioner. Massage in gently but evenly and leave for 3-4 minutes before rinsing.

Sometimes bacteria can congregate under the extensions so you need to shampoo and condition your hair and the attached extensions every two days or so. Remember that the extensions can tangle easily and could become detached if handled too roughly.

Knots unfortunately can be a problem with hair extensions as they do tangle easily. It is best to remove these whilst your hair is wet after showering. A wide-tooth comb is essential for this as it glides through the hair more easily. Gently loosen any knots or tangles and then comb through. If the knots are stubborn, use more detangling spray and have patience. Too much pulling can cause loosening of the extensions.

Natural hair extensions are especially vulnerable to heat and drying out so it is not advisable to use straightening irons or curlers every day. It is best to apply some protective spray as you would for your natural hair when using heated appliances.

You will need to have the extensions tightened as your natural hair grows and they become gradually looser. On average you should have this done every 8-12 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows.. Don’t leave it too long though otherwise you may run into problems.

Your hairdresser might suggest you replace your extensions after 6 months or so , but, with proper care they can last much longer than that, maybe as much as two years, so don’t be persuaded to replace them unnecessarily. If you care for your extensions taking heed of the advice given here you will find they are a lasting asset to your appearance.
